Wild foraging sailing trip on the Wadden Sea
Wild foraging sailing trip on the Wadden Sea
Three-day mini-vacation sailing aboard the Vliegende Hollander and foraging in the Wadden Sea area. We alternate sailing with foraging excursions for true nature lovers. Peace and connection with the landscape.
The Wadden Sea, UNESCO World Heritage
The Wadden Sea region is not only a paradise for sailors, but also for foragers. It is the last pure nature we have in the Netherlands. The ship can fall dry at low tide, allowing you to search for mussels, cockles, and seaweed. The salt marshes offer a large quantity of tasty, salt-loving plants. In addition, there are dune areas on the islands, where there is an above-average amount of edible nature to be found. It will be an interesting combination of sailing, foraging, and cooking!
Who is it for?
This trip is ideal for anyone who loves nature, is looking for a different kind of vacation in their own country, and wants to enjoy an unforgettable experience. Whether you have sailed before or have never held a rope, it makes no difference. Our crew will involve you in the ship in a pleasant way, so that you will quickly feel at home on board and have a great time.
Program
Sunday: From 8 p.m., you can board the Vliegende Hollander in Makkum. You will be welcomed by the crew, consisting of the skipper, sailor, and wild food guide. There will be time for socializing and a drink.
Monday: Early in the morning, we will cast off and sail through the lock at Kornwerd. Then we will set course for Vlieland or Terschelling. Along the way, you can actively help with sailing and share wild foraging experiences or cooking ideas with each other. Once we arrive on the island, we will have plenty of time to explore the area and go on a foraging excursion. We will search for edible plants in the island's forests, dunes, and salt marshes. In the evening, we will use our harvest in our meal.
Tuesday: Around 9 a.m., we will leave the harbor and sail to a suitable place to drop anchor. As soon as we can leave the ship, we will go in search of mussels, cockles, and seaweed. We will enjoy the vastness of the sandbanks and all the birds that, like us, are looking for food. As soon as the ship is ready to sail again, we set course for one of the islands. In the evening, we use our harvest in our dinner.
Wednesday: In the morning, there is time to go out into nature once more. After lunch, we leave with the tide back to Makkum, where we prepare a final meal from what we have collected. At 8:00 p.m., it will be time to say goodbye. For those who have a long journey home or simply don't feel like going home yet, there is the option of staying an extra night for a €50 supplement.
