Makkum is a village in the municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân, in the Dutch province of Friesland. Makkum is located between the Afsluitdijk and Workum on the coast of the IJsselmeer. The village is known for its Makkum pottery, as a water sports town and for its historic center.

Like all other Frisian towns on the former Zuiderzee, seafaring played a major role here. As a, former, Hanseatic city, Stavoren was an important trading port during the Middle Ages. Nowadays you imagine yourself in Copenhagen as you walk along the harbor with screeching seagulls, wind and its colorful houses.
