Wadden Sea Weekend – Experience Drying Out on the Tidal Flats
Discover one of the most unique adventures of sailing on a traditional flat-bottom ship: drying out on the tidal flats. These special vessels can safely settle on the sand when the water retreats, allowing you to step off the ship and explore the seabed on foot—an unforgettable experience in one of Europe’s most extraordinary natural environments.

The Wadden Sea: UNESCO World Heritage
The Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers. Sailing on the Wad means letting the wind and current guide you, navigating the channels between the sandbanks, and embracing the forces of nature around you. Wad sailing is both peaceful and adventurous—an inspiring way to experience one of the most beautiful natural areas in the Netherlands.

Program
Friday evening – 20:00
You board the Balder in the harbour of Makkum, where the crew welcomes you for a relaxed introduction to the ship and your fellow travelers. We will also discuss the plan for the next day, based on wind and tides. Saturday - After breakfast and a safety briefing on deck, we set sail. The trip begins with a short stretch across the IJsselmeer before passing through the lock onto the Wadden Sea. We then look for a suitable place to dry out, where you can witness a beautiful sunset and step onto the sandbank. Standing beside the ship on the seabed is an extraordinary sight! You’ll spend the night on the Wad—a magical experience beneath one of the darkest skies in Europe. Enjoy a glittering starry sky and the distant lights of lighthouses on islands like Terschelling and Vlieland.
Sunday - After a peaceful night, we hoist the sails again and make our way back to Makkum, arriving around 16:00.
