Regatta: Beurtveer 2026

History of the Beurtveer
The word beurtveer comes from beurtvaart. Starting in the 16th and 17th centuries, regular shipping routes between cities began to emerge in the Netherlands. This was important because overland transportation at that time was slow and difficult. Ships therefore transported passengers and goods between different locations according to a fixed schedule.
Workum also had such a regular shipping route. The Workum beurtveer existed as early as around 1550 and continued until about 1920. The ships sailed to Amsterdam and other Zuiderzee ports, among other destinations.
Around the 1970s, the old sailing traditions in Workum were revived, and this race was organized for the first time in 1974.

The race:
The Beurtveer is a sailing race lasting about three days, during which clippers and tjalken sail as quickly as possible from Workum to Amsterdam and back, with passengers on board. This is done entirely without an engine.
The ships must call at a number of mandatory ports, including Medemblik, Lemmer, Lelystad, Enkhuizen, and Amsterdam. In addition, they may choose to call at a few extra ports. The crew must select a route in advance but can still adjust it after the start.
Tactics come into play at every port: when do you lower the sail, where do you drop anchor, and how do you get away quickly? In addition, a short task must be completed while in port.
Wind, crowds, route choices, fatigue, and tactics make the Beurtveer a challenging race. The boat that visits all mandatory ports the fastest—and doesn’t use the motor—wins. The winner receives the Silver Porridge Spoon.

Whether you’re an experienced sailor or have never held a rope before, this trip is for everyone. Our experienced crew will be happy to teach you the basic skills so that you can become part of the crew in no time. The trip is suitable for solo travelers or groups of friends and offers a wonderful opportunity to share a special experience together.

Price per person in EUR based on full board: includes overnight stay (bunk bed), meals, non-alcoholic beverages, and final cleaning. The primary booker must be 21 years of age or older.
