Like all other Frisian towns on the former Zuiderzee, seafaring played a major role here. As a, former, Hanseatic city, Stavoren was an important trading port during the Middle Ages. Nowadays you imagine yourself in Copenhagen as you walk along the harbor with screeching seagulls, wind and its colorful houses.

Vrouwtje van Stavoren

The legend of the 'Vrouwtje van Stavoren'.

The flourishing and growing trading town of Stavoren fell further and further into decline from the 15th century onwards. The harbor silted up, causing boaters to look for another home port. Economically it went downhill quickly. It is this period that is told in the folk tale it of the little woman of Stavoren. In the saga all aspects of Stavoren as a trading town come to the fore.

Imagination of the Blockhouse


A fortification stood in Stavoren until about 1580, the foundations of which are still in the ground. Commissioned by the municipality of Súdwest-Fryslan, a new representation of the fortification was built on these foundations. The choice was made to use modern (non-historic) materials, such as Corten steel, concrete and glass. The original foundations have been made locally visible to the public and provided with display cases in which historical Staverse objects are permanently displayed. The depiction of the Blockhouse in itself invites recreational-touristic use.

By means of a timeline from the year zero until now, you walk along the many events that have taken place in and around the city. The Battle of Staveren, the trade relationship with Hamburg, the St. Odulphus Monastery, the Hanseatic past, the city rights, the Norman invasion, the Blockhouse, the whalers and fishermen of the past, the Vrouwtje van Stavoren, the old and the new lock and the train accident at Stavoren, everything is covered.

In addition, there are exhibitions about the ferry gate and the steam ferry service, the station and the railroad, the operation of the Peilschaalhuisje, the Staverse Jol, the plane crash in the IJsselmeer.

In short “t Ponthús” is certainly worth a visit, also for children.

From Stavoren, there are numerous opportunities to take a bicycle tour. Cycle a mini Elfstedentocht: Stavoren, Hindeloopen and Workum. Or cycle through Gaasterland with its forests and rolling countryside. Past Stavoren is the Aldefurd heritage path; a signposted ANWB route of 27 kilometers which leads you through polders, picturesque villages, along the lakes and the coast: in short, Friesland in a nutshell!
