In 1932, the Afsluitdijk closed off the Zuiderzee from the Waddenzee and the new inland lake was named “IJsselmeer. The Zuiderzee Museum focuses on the history, current events and future of the area. Walk back in time along the cobblestone streets of the Outdoor Museum. More than one hundred and forty historic buildings from around the former Zuiderzee form a complete village here. Through the outdoor museum with historic buildings and the indoor museum with thematic exhibitions, this story is made visible. Heritage, visual art, photography and design play an important role in this.
The Zuiderzee Museum not only brings the past to life but also connects it with the present. So let yourself be surprised by then and now!

Stroll through the streets and discover the history of Enkhuizen through a city walk.

1. A city walk based on a booklet, available at Primera and various hotels.

2. A guided city walk. (1.5 hours) Experienced guides can tell you everything about Enkhuizen's history, its monuments and all sorts of amusing stories and anecdotes.

3. Children's treasure hunt, “crack the code”. (1.5 hours)

This former lockkeeper's house was built over the passage to the Zuiderhaven. This after a large part of the Enkhuizer fishing fleet was smashed on the seawall (1361). The opening was closed with a wooden trap door (slide). Because of the tidal changes on the adjacent Zuiderzee, when the valve was opened, the water was thus automatically discharged. Today the Flessenscheepjes Museum is located here.
